Additional studies using treatment-seeking alcohol-dependent persons will be necessary to determine the usefulness of this herbal preparation in reducing alcohol use in other populations. A standardized formulation of kudzu extract produced minimal side effects, was well-tolerated and resulted in a modest reduction in alcohol consumption in young non treatment-seeking heavy drinkers. Separate general linear model ANOVAs for data with repeated measurements were used to analyze the number of drinks per week and the number of heavy drinking days per week. The two treatments (kudzu and placebo) were analyzed as fixed effects and time (weeks since randomization) as a repeated-measurements effect.
In its raw form, kudzu root resembles other root tubers, such as potatoes or yams. Kudzu root, also called Japanese arrowroot, is native to China, Japan, and Korea. Today, kudzu grows in other parts of the world as well, including in the southern United States. Hall said that while people are constantly surprised by the impact of placebos, maybe we shouldn’t be. All day every day, what we think is changing the way we feel and how our bodies function in significant ways.
Estrogens interacts with KUDZU
Why do we care what Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) cares about alcohol addiction treatment? As a nearly century-old organization that helps people to overcome alcohol dependence, we might worry that their views on substance abuse treatment could be outdated. Kudzu root may also be helpful for women experiencing menopausal symptoms. Research has found that kudzu can help reduce hot flashes and night sweats, as well as improve sleep quality. This may be due to the isoflavones in kudzu, which can help regulate hormone levels.
Therefore, in treating the impending and often uncontrollable urge to use drugs, the patient will use the substance less often, causing less harm. Specific medications for alcoholism continue to be the first options for both curbing cravings and maintaining abstinence. Opioid antagonists, especially Naltrexone, are drugs with the best responses [5,6,7,8,9,10]. Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a worldwide disease with strong impacts not only on people’s health, but also on the economy and society. The result is a greater number of sick patients, with consequent expenses due to hospitalizations and the involvement of a portion of the economically active population. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) surveys, worldwide, three million deaths a year result from the harmful use of alcohol, representing 5.3% of all deaths.

Until the effects of kudzu can be quantified properly in a larger study, then, and a standardised product is available on the market with the THR mark, it’s not something we can recommend you take. Two hours before the first visit, we gave both sub-groups a pill – neither group knew whether they were getting the supplement or the placebo. When they visited the bar, beer, spirits and white wine were freely available. The amount of alcohol consumed was calculated for each group (1 unit per drink of beer or spirits, 1.6 units per glass of wine). However, these studies were conducted on lone individuals drinking within highly controlled laboratory conditions.

In my opinion, the Planetary Herbals brand is a great option for someone who has not yet quit drinking, and who wants to try pure kudzu powder on its own. Most studies used the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS) as a measure (31.7%), followed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (28.5%), and then the Pennsylvania Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS) (19%). To select articles for this review, the first and the last authors read the abstracts of all the studies found in the search. The present review followed the PRISMA Statement for the transparent reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analyses [22] (Table S1). The volunteers were all friends, and so were likely to enjoy a relaxed evening’s drinking.

Antioxidants help neutralize these molecules, reducing the risk of oxidative stress and related health problems. Kudzu is also known for its flower, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat fever, headache, and other ailments. The arrowroot starch derived from the Kudzu plant is also used in cooking as a thickener. The plant contains phytoestrogens, which are compounds that mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Kudzu, also known as Pueraria Montana, is a climbing vine that belongs to the pea family. This invasive weed is native to East Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea, where it has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Kudzu is a natural medicine that is extracted from the root of the plant.

Our laboratory has been involved in assessing an extract of the kudzu root (Pueraria lobata) for its ability to reduce alcohol consumption in humans. In the first, kudzu extract was administered for 7 days and acute binge drinking was suppressed (Lukas et al., 2005). In the second, participants who were treated for 4 weeks with kudzu extract significantly reduced their alcohol consumption during weeks 2 through 4 of the study (Lukas et al., 2013). We have subsequently shown that puerarin is the major active isoflavone because 7 days treatment with this compound alone (1,200 mg/day) produced a similar reduction of binge drinking as the extract (Penetar et al., 2012). Given that a week of preplanning is unlikely before a binge drinking episode or opportunity, we built on our previous findings to explore in the present experiment if a single dose of kudzu extract taken shortly before a drinking session would reduce alcohol consumption. It is important to place the magnitude of the effects of kudzu extract on alcohol drinking in context.
In addition to pharmaceutical products, there are also natural remedies for alcohol withdrawal that may help with the alcohol detox process. Vitamins, such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, and B vitamins, including thiamine and niacin, are essential. There are also food-based and plant-based products that help to support alcohol withdrawal at home. As you may be aware, people who detox from alcohol addiction risk seizures, delirium tremens in addition to alcohol craving. However, some people may experience mild side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and headache. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking kudzu, especially if you are taking other medications or have underlying health conditions.
